Used Hot Air Balloon Information

If you are in the market for a used Aerostar hot air balloon, here are some pointers to keep in mind.

1. Make sure that the balloon has a current annual inspection

2. Ask to contact the repair station that performed the annual inspection and get their opinion of the balloon and various components.

3. If possible, physically inspect the envelope and components.

a. Are they clean and well kept?
b. Does the envelope smell when taken out of the bag?
c. Look for mold or mildew on the fabric and/or load tapes.
d. Is the wicker in the basket in good condition?
e. Are the burner(s) clean and free of dirt and soot build up?

4. Inspect the logbook and associated maintenance records. Are there numerous
entries for repairs? Do the models and serial numbers of the associated
components (i.e. gondola, burners, fuel cylinders and instruments) match with
the information listed in the logbook?

5. Inspect the maintenance records to ensure that life limited parts are current, including fuel lines and requalification of fuel cylinders.

6. Inspect maintenance records to ensure that all applicable Service Letters, Service Bulletins and Airworthiness Directives have been complied with.

7. Make sure that the seller can produce a current airworthiness certificate, federal registration information, flight manual and other documentation as detailed in FAA regulation 91,419.
